Oil and water don’t mix.
And yet Maimeri’s laboratory has come up with a special series of water-soluble oil colours which has already been manufactured and offered on the market for a number of years. Water-soluble oil colours are a recent development. A number of US states forbid the use of colours containing solvents in their schools, to protect the pupils’ health. Only water-soluble colours may be used, or pencils or pastels. Paint manufacturers got to work on the problem, picking up on an idea which originated in the first half of the twentieth century: powerful surfactants and special emulsifiers can be used in carefully balanced recipes to permit dilution of the oily paste in the least toxic of all solvents, H2O. And thus a new painting technique was born, in some ways similar to the famous fatty gouaches. Perfect for schools and other closed rooms where use of solvents and natural essences is problematic. Perfect for sensitive individuals and people with allergies. All the enjoyment and results of oil painting, with the most ecological of all dilutant. |
