Charcoals, the ideal instrument for tracing compact, smooth black lines, are now produced from particular kinds of wood burned in a vacuum to ensure that they are completely charred. Traditionally charcoals were manufactured exclusively from the wood of the spindle-tree, but now willow wood is preferred, as it offers the same quality and is more widely available. Lines drawn with charcoal are strong and full of character, and enclose the full content of many works. Gianni Maimeri himself demonstrated the power and emotional content of the line obtainable with the product in his collection I Musicisti. (The Musicians) |
