Why decorate? There’s isn’t any reason, really. The majority of the population lives a good life without grappling with brushes, colours, pastes, varnishes, waxes and so on and so forth. And besides, you can now buy a vast selection of photographic reproductions of ornamental motifs and ready-decorated objects in the shops.
So why bother? Why dedicate so much of your precious free time to making something you could buy ready-made?
To answer that question, let us consider another example. We can now get to the top of a high mountain using various mechanical means of transport, and yet there will always be people who prefer to climb the mountain on foot, along a tortuous path through the woods, past rivers, through stony ground and harsh mountain landscapes. What’s important to these people is not whether they get to the top of the mountain, but how they get there. This applies to decoration and to the decorative arts in general: it’s how you get there that’s important. The true meaning of work is “transformation”. People have always coloured and decorated the homes they live in and the objects that surround them, in various ways; there are many reasons for this, which are deeply seated in human nature.
The desire to decorate has survived throughout history, and will probably live as long as the human race does – in forms as yet unimaginable. |
