The painters task is somewhat like the alchemists: transforming
inert matter into the perfection of his work.
This goal was particularly apparent in the work of Gianni Maimeri.
He wrote in his diaries, What you call a delightful flower,
I call a harmony based on rose lake, pale blue, white and pale yellow,
slightly cooled by a touch of emerald green. Yet it never stops to
be a flower.
To Maimeri, matter was colour and colour was matter.
The ongoing investigation and transformation of his painting, of colour
as matter and of himself led Gianni Maimeri to produce two great works:
a large corpus of beautiful paintings and a paint manufacturing company
which carries on with his work and his ideal: producing colours that
meet all artists needs...
Why decorate? Theres isnt any reason, really. The majority
of the population lives a good life without grappling with brushes,
colours, pastes, varnishes, waxes and so on and so forth. And besides,
you can now buy a vast selection of photographic reproductions of
ornamental motifs and ready-decorated objects in the shops.
So why bother? Why dedicate so much of your precious free time to
making something you could buy ready-made?
To answer that question, let us consider another example...
